GENERAL INFO:

DESCRIPTION:

  • In The Sounds of Sculpture, get an artistic collection of metal casting sounds. Hear the sounds of trees, vines, and boulders that have been cast into metal. Hear how the sounds of the original object translate into its metal counterpart. Take a tree that was struck by lightning, cast it in iron, and hear how that vivid moment is frozen into the unique sound of a metal sculpture. The tree was a living thing. Does that mean it has a uniquely organic sound in its metallic form?
  • Hear rich pings of small aluminum casts and resonant booms of 2000 pound cast iron boulders. Hear bell-like tones of steel and clattering aluminum textures with real grit. Hear the hellacious screeches of bowed metal vines and the thunderous resonance of giant chain-link structures.
  • This library offers you an extensive collection of sounds from a unique metallic sound source. This library grew out of a collaboration with John Ruppert. I’m thankful to have had a chance to explore the sonic possibilities of his art. Please check out more of his work – here. Thanks for listening.

    RECORDING STORIES:

    • Full blog post coming soon. Until then, here’s a few short stories:
    • Ruppert loves to freeze natural movements in time. His “most recent castings address the way creative forces in nature shape material; comparing time and material. Wood fragments blown from trees struck by lightning and boulders worn by glaciers and water". – John Ruppert
    • John has a massive warehouse studio in Baltimore where I was able to record his art. That space is a field recordists dream. Image a warehouse full of thousands of fascinating materials a sculptor uses to make their art.
    • Many of the metal castings have flashings. These are thin metallic fins where the metal leaks out of the mold and then hardens. Turns out, if you bow the flashings on a 25 foot aluminum vine casting the whole sculpture purrs with a metallic roar unlike anything I’ve heard before. I had a great deal of fun bowed all sorts of sculptures, but the bowed vine and giant chain-link sculptures had espcially captivating sounds.
    • As always, thanks for listening.
