DESCRIPTION:

  • In Curious Bears, get an inquisitive collection of sniffs and snorts from the grizzlies of the Alaskan wilderness. Leave a microphone alone in the woods and hear curious bear's energetic investigations. Hear aggressive sniffs and slow panting breaths. Hear massive footsteps in the mossy and leafy ground. Hear smacking lips and aggressive sniffs as a grizzly decides whether or not to eat my microphones.
  • This library offers you a small collection of sounds from a wild animal. These are the curious sounds of a happy and healthy wild bear, not the depressed sounds of a sad animal confined to a cage at a zoo.

    RECORDING STORIES:

    • Read the full blog post– here.
    • There will eventually be a long blog post about my Alaskan expedition, but for now, here are a few stories.
    • On this trip, I left my Cinela blimp unattended in the wilderness of Lake Clark National Park for 24 hours a day for two weeks. On my hikes, I discovered well-defined game trails and decided to place my mics near one to capture the sounds of the passing wildlife.
    • I may have put the mics a bit to close to the trail. When I returned several hours later and my microphone blimp and tripod had been tipped over and the grass was trampled all around the mics.
    • I checked the recording and was thrilled to find that a bear done some serious investigating of my microphone blimp for 20 minutes before tipping over the tripod, scaring itself, and running off. Luckily the mics and recorder were not damaged, but there was definitely some bear slobber on the blimp from being licked :)

    • My mics had two separate bear encounters on this trip for a total of about 45 minutes of sniffs. I cut that down to the best clips of sniffs, snorts, stomps, and panting.
    • Most large predator sound effects are recorded in zoos with the mics pressed up against the bars of the sad animal's cage. I love capturing animals in the wild and I hope you enjoy the curious and playful sounds of these wild bears.

    LESSON'S LEARNED:

    • The honeycomb of Cinela's Kelly Rain Cover makes for excellent protection when animals decide to chew on your blimp.
    • Use a long cable run (50+ feet) so that animals are less likely to step on the dry bag (containing the recorder) when they are investigating the blimp.
