DESCRIPTION: 

I grew up in Texas. I love the massive summer thunderstorms you get there. It can be a hundred degrees and sunny and hailing twenty minutes later.

When I was a kid, I loved to ride my bike whenever a big storm came through. I'd hear the thunder, run out to the barn to get my bike, and then I'd ride as fast as I could down the roads near my house. Feeling the power of the storm, getting soaked to the bone, and covered in mud.

These recordings aren't the actual storms from my childhood, but they are from the Texas Hill Country, and they bring back those memories just the same, as if I'm twelve years old again riding my mountain bike madly through a thunderstorm.

I've always loved storms like birders love birds. I hope you enjoy listening to the sounds of rain in live oak forests and the rippling thunder bouncing between the limestone bluffs. These recordings were made in September and October when it's cold enough for the crickets to put away their tiny violins. Once those violins were in their cases, I could capture the isolated sounds of this beautiful rippling thunder.

BEHIND THE SCENES: 

These storm recordings came out of attempts to build the longest possible duration drop rig. I got that to work with a Sony A10 + LOM Usi + a 150 Wh Anker battery.

With that combo, I was able to record with the A10 for a new personal drop rig record of about 13 days. Because for some crazy reason, a Sony A10 will take a 1TB microSD card. The A10 is so power efficient that you can record almost forever with that amazing little recorder. Recording for 13 days was a great strategy for capturing storms, because who knows when Mother Nature will send some close to your microphones.
