DESCRIPTION:

  • In Redwoods: Inside the Tree, hear what a Redwood tree "feels". Some wildlife calls are loud enough to vibrate 1000 year old wood. So you can actually hear animal calls through the wood using contact mics. The natural resonance of the wood filters the animal call of often gives it an ethereal character. Hear ominous owl hoots filtered through ancient bark and regal ravens resonating centuries old wood.
  • This library offers you a large collection of an awe inspiring phenomenon I didn't know existed. I hope you enjoy listening to wildlife soundscapes from the perspective of Redwood trees. The tree itself is the subject, not the animal call.

KEY FEATURES:

  • Recordings made using acoustic and contact microphones in parallel
  • Stereo/Quad/Ambisonics recordings + mono/stereo contact mics
  • Wildlife sounds filtered through ancient Redwood bark
  • The ability to switch between exterior and interior perspectives of the same event
  • Active and quiet nature soundscapes

RECORDING STORIES:

  • Some wildlife is loud enough to resonant the wood of ancient Redwood trees!
  • So, for example, you can hear the sound of a Great Horned Owl through the tree using contact mics.
  • This only works with loud, lower frequencies calls like owls and ravens. Higher twittery birds don't have enough power to resonant the wood.
  • You are hearing the wildlife translated through Redwood resonance of these ancient trees. You are hearing what a Redwood tree "feels" as sounds in its environment vibrate its wood!
  • One thing to note – This project was done on private property protected by the Sempervirens Fund and I had permission to mount LOM Geofones in the bark using spikes. The bark on these trees was incredibly thick and limited use of these spikes for mounting did not damage these old trees.
