DESCRIPTION:
Leafless deciduous forests have a special soundscape. I first heard it while escaping COVID in the woods of Maine in 2020. I heard that old friend again in northern Finland in March 2026.
Because of recent glaciation (up until about 10,000 years ago) birch are one of the few species of trees in northern Finland. And they often grow in single species groves. It is unusual to be able to be able to do a single species portraits of one tree. The thousands of small leafless branches act as large "needles" that resonant as the wind sweeps through. It is a deeply calming sound to hear live.
If someone wants to pay me to record in jungles, I'd surely take that gig. But if left to my own devices, I seek out sparse, open, cold spaces. My happy place is with the subtle airy tones of almost silent spaces.
These quiet spaces are tricky to record, require gear with extremely low self-noise, and often require contending with spicy weather. But these spaces sooth my soul after too many weeks in the city.
That's a wrap on my 148th sound library from the natural world, and I hope you enjoy listening. I'll talk to you again soon.
