DESCRIPTION:
Far northern Finland is an almost silent space. Exploring these types of polar places in the winter is one of my favorite things. The region around Lake Inari in Lapland is extra special because there are almost no commercial airplane flyovers.
That's extremely rare nowadays, and I've only found it in two other places in the world. I recorded for two weeks almost continuously, and there were less than ten planes total in all of my recordings.
That made for especially magical recording conditions, to try and capture some of the species that winter over in this polar wonderland. The highlight by far is a ptarmigan, which sounds like this ridiculous clown of a bird. My guide in Lapland called them Arctic turkeys, and they make some very comical sounds.
I hope you enjoy listening to the regal croaks and whistling wing flaps of ravens, the squawks of Siberian jays, the whooshing wing flaps and flitters of twittering birds exploring near my mics, and the resonant knocking echoes of woodpeckers drilling into old Scotts pines.
That's a wrap on my 144th sound library from the natural world, and I hope you enjoy listening. I'll talk to you again soon.
